Dear Nuestros Ranchos members,

I have a question regarding our recent DNA sample submitted to Family Tree DNA. We submitted a sample and have received the MTDNA, for HVR1 and HVR2. My question is about my brother's Y DNA. They indicated they could not predict his haplogroup therefore they will be running his DNA sample through what they call Backbone SNP. Have any of you experienced this? Is this common or is this an anomaly?

During the 3rd Annual Family Tree DNA Conference on Genetic Genealogy, we announced that if we could not predict your haplogroup with 100%
confidence, we would run your DNA sample through our Backbone SNP test for
free. Please note that the DNA values that you received are
correct, it is the haplogroup that we would like to confirm through this
additional test.

Thanks for your help,
Alicia, San Jose, Calif

DNA, Backbone SNP TEST

Yes, 1 of 4 different samples (four different male lines) came back with a
need for SNP testing after they had already run two samples. My
understanding is that they did not have enough close matches in their bank
of data to clearly define the haplogroup. In that case it ended up to be
Haplogroup Q, but with no matches thus far. I have found the staff there
very willing to explain the issues involved, so call or email them. One
time I had to wait several days for a call-back, but it came.

DNA, Backbone SNP TEST

Alicia,

I had My Y DNA at Family Tree. Due to the unlikely result they did a
Backbone SNP that they did not charge me for. I recall that part of
this test is to rule out other haplogroups. Although records show my
paternal line originates in San Luis Potosi, the actual origin showed
Haplogroup O, originating in South Asia, probably the Phillipines.
This is not found in the native American population.

I'd be curious to hear the result of your brother's test

DNA, Backbone SNP TEST

Thanks Eric,

That's good to know, I'll let everyone know the outcome of the Backbone SNP test when we receive the results.

Have a good holiday everyone, and let's not forget to remember and give thanks for our war veterans.

Alicia,
San Jose, Calif
