Could anyone please tell me whether Lino is a first name or a nickname?
I have an ancestor named Lino Monrreal early to mid 1800's in Aguascalientes.  I haven't found any reference to any other first name, like maybe Marcelino?  It's always only Lino Monrreal.   Thank  you so much for your help.   Alice Blake

Lino

Alice:

Of course Lino is used also as a proper name. My sixth great grandfather was named José Lino de Agraz y Contreras.

Linus

Lino is Spanish for Linus. There is a St. Linus, Pope, with feast on September 23 (San Lino). I guess some people may also use it as nickname for Paulino, Marcelino, Catalino, etc.

Linus

Thank you, Victoriano.  Therefore, Lino is a proper first name, indeed!
I doubted that people would use nicknames on church documents, but on the other hand, it crosssed my mind that it could also be an abbreviation.  For the first time I've seen the following abbreviation for Maria--"Maa", in the same church book.   Thanks again,  Alice
