Ancestry.com and Family Finder do autosomal testing. Autosomal testing
looks at the DNA that you inherited from all of your ancestral lines. You
don't inherit autosomal DNA from all of your ancestors but you do inherit
autosomal DNA from all of your ancestors. It can be confusing and hard to

Family Finder is much better than Ancestry.com because it allows you to see
which chromosome you coincide with your matches. This allows for
triangulation in order to pinpoint which ancestors passed down that segment
of autosomal DNA. Family Finder also tells you how much autosomal DNA you
have in common. Anything less than 5.5 is called IBS Identity by State and
is insignificant.
Ancestry.com is also different than Family Finder which is also different
from 23andme which is also different than Geno 2.0. I prefer using the
Family Finder raw data and running it through the Dodecad Globe13 which
includes Amerindian testing and also has a source database. Only Globe13
and Geno 2.0 inlcude source population info. They are the most transparent
calculators. The names of the ancestral components of Globe13 closely match
those of Gen0 2.0. A program for using the Globe13 calculator is at http://www.y-str.org/tools/diy-dodecad-wrapper/
Y-DNA helps identify the paternal line and can provide matches on the
paternal line. If you relatives that you don't know their paternal then
they should get a Y-DNA test. The mtDNA is strictly the female line. If you
have relatives for which you can't identify the female line the mtDNA test
might help but since the mtDNA changes so slowly it is hard to identify how
two females are related. It is more for determining if it is Amerindian or
European.
If you upload your raw Family Finder data to www.gedmatch.com you will be
able to triangulate with others once that feature is put back on the site.
It takes 6 weeks for the file to process so you want to get the file
uploaded as soon as possible.
