Has anyone been able to trace information on the place of birth and the name of the parents of Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus?

Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus

I have heard two Navarra (Pamplona) or Aragón. But no evidence, I seen it on the NEw México Society. Supposedly Vaulus is of French Origin hence Aragón in Spain. -Daniel

Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus

Daniel, John and Bill,
I was looking for Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus in PARES under a variety of combinations trying to locate his voyage to Nueva Espana and perhaps more information on this individual's family. None of the Pedro's Fernandez located suggested a connection with our Pedro. I finally searched for Siordia and got the following hit:

Could this Pedro Hernandez (de Siordia) be Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus? Given that at the time the usage of H and F were equivalent (Hernan=Fernan, Hierro=Fierro) we can assume the surnames are the same. Also, one of the three daughters of Pedro Fernandez de Vaulus and Maria Gabay was named Juana de Siorida, just like the mother of this Pedro from Pamplona that travelled to New Spain in 1566 with new Viceroy DON GASTON DE PERALTA, marqués de Falces, his employer. This Pedro was single, he may have been young (perhaps 16), making him about 40 when he married Maria. I guess if we could check on some records for Pamplona for a Pedro Hernandez and Juana de Siordia, and were to find a Vaulus connection, this matter could be settled.

What do you think?

>From my opinion this is a hard one, but funny how he is also from Pamplona, I once read in the NMGS (New Mexico Genealogical Society) that stated he was from Pamplona or near Aragon, but didnt see a source. The switching of the H and F is for sure it was common depending what part of Spain you came from, some pronounced the H and F and other parts vice versa (today the H is silent in Modern Castilian. Personally I do think that is him, because of Juana Siordia, its possible he took on Vaulaus as a new surname, it was common back then families often changed their last names to signify a new beginning or house. How many my times my maternal family changed it di Montanara>>>(da Camino di Treviesi) da Camino, de Camino, Gutiérrez del Camino, del Camino, Pérez de Camino>>>Pérez del Camino, now my descendants will take on Méndez del Camino. I think Valaus is where he was born. I just think we need to keep an eye out for this, I will see what I can dig up on his parents. -Daniel

Jaime,

I think you hit it on the head. As you said, it is not unusual to find the surname "Fernandez" written "Hernandez", like "fierro" and "hierro", "foja" and "hoja" etc. Siordia is NOT a common name, so the possibility of having a Pedro Hernandez, the son of Pedro Hernandez and Juana de Siordia, sail from Spain in 1566 and marry Maria Gabai ca.1580 is good. It fits the timeline. Furthermore, the fact that he named his three daughters Maria, like his wife, Petrona, like his mother-in-law (Petronila de Moctezuma) and Juana, like his own mother, makes sense. Juana was better known as Joana de Siordia. She first married Bernardo Salado, a descendant of Joanes de Salado, Escribano de la Real Audiencia de Guadalajara (I believe he was his son) and when he died she married Francisco Rodriguez Ponce in San Juan de los Lagos. I'm glad you found this important bit of information. I will check other documents and let you know if I find a discrepancy.
