  • Question about Church Records
Por resco16 | Dom, 26/10/2008 - 08:50

When I read the old church records I am curious about for instance marriages. It shows witnesses but usually says something like: testigos de edad or mayores de edad. What does that mean? Also, they seem to show grandparents names, listed as AP or AM and I assume that stands for Abuelos Paternos or maternal? Is that right?

Question about Church Records

Testigos de edad o mayores de edad stand for adults (as opposed to menores de edad=minors). Regarding AP and AM, you are correct Paternal and Maternal grandparents, respectively.

Sincerely

Jaime

Question about Church Records

Thank you Jaime. Normally are the adults (or minors) related? I notice the last names tend to be the same but not sure of their relations yet but thankfully I found this site to search.  My cousin told me that we are distant relatives of Gen. Mariano Escobedo (not direct descendants) and because of that our male ancestors were conscripted into the federal army to fight against Pancho Villa. I was wondering are there any military records?

Question about Church Records

A great book to buy would be "Finding Your Hispanic Roots" by George
Ryskamp. Excellent information that explains all the various words and
much other information.
