Searching for surnames

  • Agregar
  • Por RaquelRuiz | Dom, 06/02/2011 - 12:27

I think this question may be for Arturo or Joseph. Is there a way to search the surnames other members are investigating, if they are not included in the Gedcom resource? (Other than looking up members with that surname?) For example, how can I check which other members are also investigating a particular surname or, better yet, which members are searching for a particular surname in a particular state? This may be obvious, I just haven't learned how to do it. Thanks

    Searching for surnames

    Raquel,

This gave me an idea. If there were a list of surname groups with each
member being able to join a specific surname group so that each member could
see which other members are researching the same surname it could possibly
help with some with their investigations. Only those that join could see the
others so there wouldn't be anyone included that didn't want to even if they
    are researching the surname.

    Searching for surnames

    Armando,
That sounds like a great idea and a useful resource.  I don't know what the percentage is of members that have posted a gedcom, but there must be many, that although actively researching, haven't.   Thanks,
    Alice Blake

    Searching for Surnames using GEDCOM

I believe that this would be quite an undertaking (creating new surname lists), while there already is a method of searching for people researching the same surnames. It is in place under the GEDCOM. I believe that there are only a handful of members who have submitted their GEDCOMS compared to the total number of members. Maybe this would be a good time for all members to consider submitting GEDCOMS, even if it is only a partial GEDCOM. I think most of us are using software that will create a GEDCOM for us and if not, there are numerous free programs out there for use. This is one of the advantages of becoming a member, access to other member's research, but to take full advantage of it, there is a give and take. Please consider today the day that you share some research. The GEDCOM search in place on this website is a powerful tool and easy to use, but in order for it to be effective, members need to share.

I would upload my family tree gedcom to this site but my tree includes both my ancestors from Mexico and my Anglo side. Would this be inappropriate?

    family tree gedcoms

this group is for research regarding the states of Jalisco, Zacatecas
y/o Aguascalientes. As long as your gedcom includes info on that area
then I think it is ok. However if you have a very large gedcom file and
5% of it is your Mexican side and the rest your Anglo side I think this
would not be a good idea. There are ways to select individuals from your
research to be included in your gedcom. If your gedcom only includes few
of your Mexican side then be selective and divide up your gedcom. If
your gedcom is 50/50 and it would be a large under doing then just
upload the whole thing. We have lots of space available for uploading so
    that is not an issue.

If Arturo thinks of some reason why uploading the Anglo side then I'll
defer to his judgment as I'm not up on the technical end of it.

    Searching Surnames, Uploading GEDCOMS

An easy way to find other members who are researching your town or surname of interest is to simply go to (after logging on):

    http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/search/profile

Type in the surname or place name. Since everyone has filled out a profile with the places and surnames that they are researching, this should bring up members who have indicated they are researching the given surname or place.

Everyone should make sure to keep their profiles up to date with new places or surnames as your research progresses.

I also encourage everyone to upload a GEDCOM. It is by far the most useful tool for sharing your genealogy as it is easily searchable across members' trees.

    =ESPAÑOL=
Un modo fácil de encontrar otros miembros quienes están investigando algún apellido o pueblo es simplemente ir (después de ingresar al sitio) a:

    http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/es/search/profile

    Searching for surnames

Here is how I would do it. This method works best if members are
diligent at submitting and/or updating their user profiles to include
their latest data. If you haven't updated your user profiles this would
be a great time to do that.

    1) at the top right side of the page click on "Search" with the window
    left blank
    2) click on Advanced Search
    3) Put the surname of interest into the window and click the "advanced
    search" button
    4) click on "user profiles"

now you should get every member in the group that is doing research on
    that name.

let's say You are looking for Garcia's and the area of research is
    Teocaltiche

I put in Garcia in the first line and Teocaltiche in the phrase section
of the advanced search and you will get a list of all the results for
Garcia and Teocaltiche so you would need to go from page to page of the
results looking for the results that have both words highlighted in
Yellow (easy to see if its in yellow).

    give it a try.

Also you can go to the files and do a search from your computer (using
the page search option on your computer) on locations under members
genealogies. If you find someone researching your area look at their
folder in hopes of similar surnames.
