  • My Great Grandfather and Her Sister Same Name Calistro Madera/Calistra Madera But I can't find his
Por MADERA_32 | Jue, 15/05/2014 - 22:32

I have made an extensive search trying to find the baptism record of my Great Grandfather Calistro (Calixto) Madera. But I have found the baptism records of his brothers and sisters. But his I still can't find my Great Grandfather's Baptism Record. But I found a Baptism record of a sister with the same name. This is wierd. His sister, "Calistra Madera" Baptized in 1853 daughter of "Patricio Madera and Dimas De La Paz" Her Paternal Grandparents are Juan Benancio Madera and Geronima Fernandez:

Same name, but no record

I had a somewhat similar situation in my research.

The sister of my g-g-grandfather was said to have been born on a particular date but there is no record of her. However, there is a baptismal record of the masculine version of her name (Anastacia, Anastacio) showing the same birth date. Within the record it shows "hijo de" and also lists the name as "Jose Anastacio." (There is no family remembrance as to her having a twin.)

My current theory is that the priest just screwed-up. Perhaps when writing down the information of the baptism at a later time he inadvertently mixed-up the genders trying to remember if a child was a boy or a girl. I saw the same situation in another record, not of my family, but within baptismal records.

There are no civil records available to double check the birth. Have you tried looking for him and her in the civil records?

That is my best guess on your question.

Good luck!

Same name, but no record

Thank you MTCarillo,

Last night I began to look in the Civil Records and as I was browsing the topics on what to choose. It occurred to me that my Great Grandfather past away in December of the year 1923 as I have been to his tombstone. So I checked in Defunciones of the year 1923 and bingo! I found that document on him and it says it ws 72 years old. I misjudged the age when he past away. I thought he was in his 60's and tried looking at 1856 as my estimate. But now I know that since he was 72 years old in 1923 he should be in 1851 baptismo records which I will be searching next and hope to find it there.
