Does anyone recall where in Mexico, in the early settlement days. that there were some documents in the churches serving indigenous people that were in the language of the Indians of that locality? I know I saw them somewhere, but I don't remember where

Church documents in indigenous languages?

Hello Emily,I found some in Bautismos de Indios entries from 1609-1659 Huichapan, Hidalgo in a language other than Spanish.  It turns out to be Otomi.  Of course, there are Spanish words, as there probably weren't Otomi words that correspond to Spanish calendrical references. What's really interesting is that Baustimos de Espanoles 1612-1718 were also written in Otomi.  That, I really don't understand.Alice BB

Yes, it was Otomi now that I recall; I just forgot the location. Thanks so much

Now that you mention it … I thought I saw some in the older records in Mexico City. But I can’t be sure.
