My great grandfather, Jose Mucio Codina, was ordained to the priesthood in Guadalajara in 1855. I found his ordination documents in the Diocese of Guadalajara eccleciastical records on one of the films from the Family History Library. The records consist of a batch of 26 loose pages related to his ordination requirements.

Several of the documents dealt with Mucio's father presenting three witnesses to his parish priest, each testifying that Mucio met the following criteria:
1. That Mucio was the son of a legitimate marriage.
2. That his parents are from a decent family 'y de sangre buena.'
3. That no one from this generation has descended from Moors.
4. That Mucio's generation did not have any infamous persons.

Mucio Codina served as a traveling priest in the state of Zacatecas for 15 years, after which he got married and moved to Texas. It wasn't until I started doing genealogy research that I discovered that my ancestor had been a priest. I thought I would post this information in case anyone else had a priest in their family tree.

early 1600 Ordination Records

Hi Omar,

Great find on your great grandfather. I looking for same records for a Br. Lazaro Gutierrez de Hermosillo whow was ordained circa the early to mid 1600s. Did you by any chance order films for those years? Also, can you give an example of one the film numbers you usde so that I might be to able to order some from LDS.

Thanks,

Sergio Gutierrez

I did not look for records in that time period, but for the Diocese of Guadalajara look at films 0168673 thru 0168678. They are titled Documentos eclesiásticos--ordenes.

Wow, this was a great message. Was it difficult to find the record? Did
you need to look at many rolls of film to find it? Was there any kind of
index? How did you know to look at the 1855 year? I have a possible
priest relative (Cipriano Puente) in about 1865 from Huejucar but don't
know how far back in those Diocese records to look.

Very interesting message, wonderful contribution, thanks.

Ordination Records

The records for the Diocese of Guadalajara are not indexed and the date ranges are widely overlapped. I looked through 14 films before I found the right one. Here are some tips that may help you narrow the search:

1. The records are batched according to the ordination date not the date he entered the seminary.
2. My great grandfather was ordained at age 30, so look a few years before and after this age.
3. The batches of records all have a cover page, making it easy to skim through the films.

In the batch, I found certificates of baptism and confirmation, completion of course certificates, many character witness testimonials and the correspondence within the diocese.

Good luck!

Dear Group,
I've never had trouble accessing the Mexico church records before, but  for two days now I've been unable to.  I go to the familysearch.org site and click beneath the world map on US Canada and Mexico.  Normally that would do it.  This method still opens Europe and South America.  Is that portion of the site down?  If not, what am I doing wrong and how do I access the records?  Your help is greatly appreciated.    Thanks so much,   Alice

You are correct, the map doesn't seem to be uploading...however, I've been
able to access records by typing in a family name....and go from
there...hopefully, this helps you out.

You're right.  I tried that, and it accesses indexed records, but not the actual church records.  Is it known when the church records will be made accessible?   Thanks so much for your response.   Alice
