I don't seem to be able to break any further than what I now have for my
Luna line. I was able to find Maria Trejo's parents (Tomas Trejo and Maria
Espinoza). Might someone recognize these names as their ancestors as well?
Felix Luna and Maria Trejo married 1851… Gregorio Herrera and Fermin
Duran married 1859
Ambrosio Luna Trejo b: 1851 and Patricia Sandoval
Atanacio Luna Trejo b: 1855 and Maria Florencia Herrera Corchado
(I am a direct descendant of this line and have much of the information)
Margarito Luna Trejo b: 1853 and Regina Herrera married in
1876
Jose Jesus Luna Herrera, October 1877
Gregorio Luna Herrera b: 1878

Luna Family

I looked at the marriage record for Felix Luna and Maria Trejo. They had a dispensation for 4th degree consanguinity and 4th degree affinity. Have you looked for the matrimonial information? This may provide some details.

Consanguinty

Consanguinity means a blood relationship. The definitions of degree vary somewhat by source.

In the Catholic Church, 4th degree consanguinity means 3rd cousins. If you do a google search, you will find articles with tables that illustrate the degrees.

Affinity, on the other hand, means kinship by marriage, ie, an "in-law." In the Church, Canon 109 states:

1. Affinity arises from a valid marriage, even if not consummated, and exists between a man and the blood relatives of the woman and between the woman and the blood relatives of the man.
2. It is so computed that those who are blood relatives of the man are related in the same line and degree by affinity to the woman, and vice versa.

The Church's Canon Law banned marriages within the fourth degree since about 1215, but dispensations were commonly given.

Sometimes the dispensation will give all the details of the relationship, sometimes not.

Consanguinity

You're welcome!

It is always interesting to find these statements in the marriage records, as in this case. If the dispensation is with the matrimonial investigation there is always the hope that it will provide all the details. Some do, and unfortunately some do not. The dispensations are only sometimes filed with the matrimonial investigation (I looked for this one going back four months prior, but no luck), but sometimes they are elsewhere, perhaps with the diocesan records.

I've seen references that say there are sometimes actual family tree charts in the dispensations, but I've not yet actually seen one.

My experience is that the matrimonial investigation is about a month prior to the wedding, more or less. If a dispensation is needed, the process could start several months prior.
