Hello Armando, I am contemplating the Y-DNA, however, I have a
question regarding the Y-DNA, according of what I have read on
the subject, is that through the Y-DNA, it will discover a paternal
ancestor, in my case the surname de Leon. I am willing to invest the
necessary funds, if the test will provide me with the information
for me to break through the wall, I have encountered while researching my grandfather Bartolo de Leon. I have been very successful with my maternal
ancestry surnames of Garcia, Reyes,Bocanegra, Macias, Mendoza, Tiscareno
Ruiz
de Esparza, de Udabe, etc of Aguascalientes, the only results I have
encountered of the de Leon surname is from various administrators of
ANCESTRYDNA, however, so far the claim is that the MATCH is their wives,
husbands, etc and that is as far as it goes. I wonder if by having the
Y-DNA test done, I would enhance my research. Thanks, Arturo

Hello Arturo,

There is no guarantee that you would be able to break through the wall with
a Y-DNA test even if you match another person. What it can do is tell you
if you have matches and if you do whether they have the same surname and it
provides you with their email address so you can ask them if they have a
tree if there isn't one on their FTDNA page. If you don't have any matches
at least you will know that the paternal line doesn't belong to any of the
ones that have tested so far. Many of them can be seen at
https://www.familytreedna.com/public/NuevaGaliciaDNA/default.aspx?secti…
and there are many others that haven't joined the project but can be seen
in other projects or in ysearch.org or SMGF.org where you can also upload
your results to try and find a match.

You would also be able to find out your haplogroup if you get the Y-DNA
test.

If you don't get the test you will never know if there is a Y-DNA match.

If you do decide to get a Y-DNA test you need to test at least 37 markers
because matches at 12 and 25 markers can be due to a common ancestor from
1,000 or more years ago. A close match at 67 markers should put the most
recent common ancestor within the past 500 years although in rare cases the
match can be from slightly further back in time.

You can also transfer your AncestryDNA raw data file to FTDNA for $39 and
see if there are autosomal DNA matches and see if they have a tree that
helps you. The transfer can be done at
https://www.familytreedna.com/AutosomalTransfer?

You can use a $15 coupon with any of the tests you purchase. The coupon
code is 15for15. I'm not sure if it can be used more than once for the same
account but just in case try ordering the tests separately if you do decide
to get the tests.

You can also try and find autosomal DNA matches by creating an account at
www.Gedmatch.com and upload your AncestryDNA raw file there. A lot of
people from 23andme, FTDNA, and AncestryDNA have uploaded their files there.

The instructions for downloading the raw DNA file from AncestryDNA can be
seen http://dna.ancestry.com/atFAQ#raw-3

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hello Arturo,

I had sent this message out as an email but it didn't post to this thread. If the email ever posts here I apologize for the double post.

Thank you Armando, guess I will do the test and try and see if I can perform the downloads you suggested, I am not especially an IT geek, wish I had the learning abilities the younger generation has, at 73 yrs, not everything is as clear.
