By lorenzocarrillo94 | Sun, 2011-09-18 16:50

So yesterday I went out and bought a bunch of used tapes and a tape recorder for my research. I played the first tape and it really broke my heart, an elderly woman( who was in her 80s I'm guessing) was talking about her life in the early 20s and through the depression . She was talking about her life because she " feared she didn't have much more time". It's sad to hear a lost piece if someone's family history just go like that. What should I do? I don't want to record over it .

Someone's lost history..

I am assuming that there is no identifying info so that you could return
these tapes to the family. What about your local historical society? Or if
you live near a univerisity, contacting the history dept. there? I see
online that there is something called the Oral History Association, link :
http://www.oralhistory.org/. Maybe they can suggest something. It is sad,
and I can understand and admire your sense of obligation to not let this
woman's words be lost. Good luck.

Someone's lost history..

Lorenzo Carrillo

Yea she only mentions the names of one of her friends, her step father and ex - husband. She also mentions her childhood in san pedro,ca and later life in Oceanside,ca. I should probably try to find her son. She mentions his name but I can imagine he is on age already (80+) years old.

Someone's lost history..

here is the website to the San Pedro Bay Historical Society:

http://historicalsociety.sanpedro.com/

or the Oceanside Historical Society:

http://oceansidehistoricalsociety.org/

that is where I'd go with it.

Thank you for trying to save a persons memories. . .they are more than
words but her life.

Someone's lost history..

I wouldn't give it to the family, who might not be interested and just throw the tape away again.

The best place would be the genealogical society or historical museum in San Pedro or a University's special collections. That is where I found tapes in New Mexico of my mothers cousins who are all long gone, and I am the only one who seems interested in copies of the tapes.

Lorenzo CarrilloYes I think maybe the San Pedro society would be a great idea . They could benefit from the tape. Since it talks about their history briefly too .. Thank you for the input. I'm going to see if I can contact them this week about it.
