Hello Everyone,

Can anyone help with a Marriage Translation. It's in Nochistlan 1627-1686, Image #153 Top left. For Jhoan Francisco Xauregui and Josepha de Chaves. Where are they from, and what does Vago mean? and is Salguero a place or surname?

Many Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

You are dealing with the Xáuregui family of Nochistlán and the region round about, this one is very interesting and you’ll know why in a bit.

Here is the transcription,

Presentes Jhoan de Nungarai i Nicolás Ramíres. [Nota] Velaronse en Nochistlán a 29 de abril de este año. Presentes Lucas de Lomelí y Nicol’as Ramíres.

Juan Francisco de Xáuregui was a penínsular, native of San Sebastián, Vizcaya, (País Vasco), Spain. Juan de Chávez Salguero was his entire name and additional information for his family can be found in the 1651 padrón (census) of Nochistlán, where it lists his wife and children at the time.

The marriage record after your Xáuregui is my ancestor, Ruíz de Salazar who was also a “vago” from Sevilla, Andalucía, Spain. Just another example.

Vago in this context just means foreigner. It is very likely he had to ask for a dispensa de Ultramarino, since he was foreign, in order to marry his wife. A dispensa de Ultramarino is just like any other marriage dispensation, but it focuses more on the foreigner. A full on investigation on who he/she is, his parents, sometime grandparents, lineage, place of birth, occupation and usually presents three witnesses who know him/her. It is a valuable tool and priceless document in research.

Hi Lisa,

Yes, the record below for Ruiz de Salazar that also mentions Vago is my ancestor. Except he was from Sevilla in southern Spain. The padron, I believe can be found in the document page of Nuestros Ranchos. I probably have the digital copy somewhere. Another good source for these families would be Genealogias de Nochistlan by Vasquez y Rodriguez de Frias. Some errors every now and then, but overall is a useful tool because it quotes many diverse records.
